Understanding inclusion and exclusion criteria
Why not every trial suits every person – and how to read a trial's criteria.

Every trial defines exactly who can take part. At first glance these inclusion and exclusion criteria seem off-putting – in fact they protect participants and ensure meaningful results.
What inclusion criteria are
Inclusion criteria describe which requirements must be met: the diagnosis, often the stage, previous treatments, an age range, sometimes a particular biomarker. Participation is only possible if all of them apply.
What exclusion criteria are
Exclusion criteria name circumstances that speak against participation – such as certain comorbidities, medications that are incompatible with the study drug, or pregnancy. They mainly serve your safety.
How to read the criteria
On studiefinden.de you will find the most important criteria in plain language. If a point is unclear or you are not sure whether it applies to you: write it down and ask your care team. Often only the screening decides.
