CLL17

The treatment of CLL has undergone a revolution over the past 10 years. Chemotherapy, which used to be the standard of care, has now largely taken a back seat. Today, CLL is treated either with long-term use of a medication (e.g., ibrutinib) that inhibits a specific signaling pathway. Alternatively, there is a combination of a targeted antibody (obinutuzumab) and a drug that promotes the self-destruction of tumor cells (venetoclax). Both therapies have already been tested in clinical trials and have shown better efficacy than chemotherapy. A direct comparison of the drugs has so far only been conducted in clinical trials. In Germany, this is being investigated in the CLL17 trial. Patients are randomly assigned to one of three treatment options: 1. Ibrutinib 2. Obinutuzumab + Venetoclax 3. Venetoclax + Ibrutinib All three treatment options are highly effective for CLL. This has already been demonstrated in clinical trials. The study is now investigating which of these three therapies is the most effective and could therefore become the standard of care in the future.
