Radiation therapy using the MR-Linac is used when tumors need to be treated with exceptional precision while minimizing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible. This method combines high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging with precise radiation therapy using a linear accelerator. The goal of the MOMENTUM study is to investigate the efficacy, tolerability, and impact of MRI-guided radiation therapy with the MR-Linac on disease progression and quality of life. Cancer is one of the most common diseases worldwide and can affect many different organs, including the prostate, breast, lungs, pancreas, rectum, bladder, and brain. Radiation therapy is a proven treatment method that is often used in conjunction with surgery or chemotherapy. However, this can damage healthy tissue surrounding the tumor, causing side effects. To reduce the risk of damage to surrounding tissue, the MR-Linac was developed—a device that combines a state-of-the-art radiation therapy machine (linear accelerator) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Doctors can see in real time how the tissue moves or changes, allowing them to better adjust the radiation dose to the tumor.
The goal of the MOMENTUM study is to investigate how the use of the MR-Linac affects disease progression, side effects, and quality of life. The study is an international observational study being conducted at several cancer centers worldwide. This is not a clinical drug trial, but rather the collection and analysis of treatment data to further develop and evaluate the technology. Follow-up as part of the study lasts for up to 2 years, during which follow-up appointments are scheduled 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment.
Eligible participants include women and men aged 18 and older who have been diagnosed with cancer and are scheduled for either imaging or treatment with the MR-Linac. Patients with prostate, breast, lung, esophageal, rectal, pancreatic, bladder, liver, and brain tumors, as well as those with head and neck tumors, gynecological cancers, and a limited number of metastases (oligometastases) may be included in the study. Participation requires that there are no contraindications for an MRI (e.g., metal implants or pacemakers that are not MRI-compatible, or pregnancy).
